Who needs Tv, when a toilet-roll-telescope
can ZOOT you around the world in mere
minutes!
When Gav gets reading his Big Bathroom
Book his imagination draws him out of
his humble home & drops him ZAP!
in the middle of fantastic lands. Here
he eats dust with Colonel Custard, crosses
the Great Lakes on the back of a giant
kangaroo & plays frisbee with the
sun! Somewhere between biscuit canyons,
paint lakes, teacup castles & tin-can
Baobabs he expends huge amounts of creative
energy, which make for absolutely fabulous
fun. WOW!
Gav's friends call him, Gullible, to
believe in the ancient magic of books
- but then so are we, that's why we're
busy reading them right now....
Sally Whines' illustrations of Jolanta
Durno's witty, woozy & wacky tale
are brilliant. Combining indigenous
craft with digital photography, they
make for visual feast! Included within
the pages are beadwork, wirework,
fabric-printing, clay modelling, acrylics
& oils, and skilfully hand-rendered
water-colour illustrations. Sally
has made use of pot-scourers &
broom bristles in some of her characters,
as well as recycled waste to create
a psychedelic baobab tree. Africa
is, after all, the cradle of humankind,
and of storytelling.
